The Subjunctive in Relative Clauses, Part 1 of 2
Je connais quelqu'un qui sait or je cherche quelqu'un qui sache: the mood in a relative clause tells whether the thing you describe exists.
Pattern Practice: Je cherche quelqu'un qui...
Drill one frame with many verbs: chercher, vouloir, avoir besoin de or rêver de + un(e) + noun + qui / que + subjunctive.
Minimal Pairs: J'ai un ami qui... / Je cherche un ami qui...
The same relative clause in both moods: when the difference is invisible, when you can hear it, and why nous and vous give it away.
Circuit: Il n'y a personne qui..., Je ne connais rien qui...
When the antecedent doesn't exist at all (personne, rien, aucun), the relative clause takes the subjunctive.
The Subjunctive in Relative Clauses, Part 2 of 2
Questions about existence, le seul and le premier, and superlatives: when they take the subjunctive and when a plain fact keeps the indicative.
Questions and Answers: Connais-tu quelqu'un qui... ?
Ask whether someone exists with the subjunctive, then answer yes with the indicative or no with personne and the subjunctive.
Choose and Explain: N'importe qui, Qui que ce soit, Tout ce que
Say 'anyone', 'anything' and 'whatever' the French way: n'importe qui / quoi, qui que ce soit, quoi que ce soit, and tout ce que + future.
Real-World Mission: Petites Annonces
Read and write French classified ads for a flatshare, a babysitter and a used car, with their abbreviations and telegraphic style.
Talk About Yourself: La Personne que Tu Cherches
Describe a flatmate, a colleague or a partner you haven't met yet, and contrast them with people you already know.
