由于…因此, 为了, 只好 and 不得不: Causes, Purposes and Having No Choice

因为…所以 from A2 is perfect for conversation. In reports, news and essays, Chinese switches to 由于…因此. This guide also covers purpose (为了, in order to) and the two ways to say you had no choice.

由于…因此…

由于 (yóuyú) "owing to" introduces the cause; 因此 (yīncǐ) "therefore" the result. Both are more formal than 因为 and 所以. 由于 can also take a noun phrase: 由于天气原因 (due to the weather).

  • 由于天气原因，航班取消了。

    Yóuyú tiānqì yuányīn, hángbān qǔxiāo le.

    The flight was cancelled due to the weather.

  • 由于准备得很充分，因此他们成功了。

    Yóuyú zhǔnbèi de hěn chōngfèn, yīncǐ tāmen chénggōng le.

    Because they prepared thoroughly, they succeeded.

为了: in order to

为了 (wèile) + goal states a purpose, usually at the start of the sentence. Compare 为 + person (for someone) and 因为 (because): 为了 looks forward to an aim, 因为 back to a cause.

  • 为了学好中文，他每天都练习。

    Wèile xuéhǎo Zhōngwén, tā měi tiān dōu liànxí.

    He practises every day so he can learn Chinese well.

  • 我这么做是为了你。

    Wǒ zhème zuò shì wèile nǐ.

    I'm doing this for your sake.

只好 vs 不得不

只好 (zhǐhǎo) + verb: "had to settle for", the only option left, often with mild resignation. 不得不 (bùdébù) + verb: "have no choice but to", stronger and a little more formal, stressing outside pressure.

  • 没有出租车了，我们只好走回家。

    Méiyǒu chūzūchē le, wǒmen zhǐhǎo zǒu huí jiā.

    There were no taxis, so we had to walk home.

  • 公司让我加班，我不得不取消约会。

    Gōngsī ràng wǒ jiā bān, wǒ bùdébù qǔxiāo yuēhuì.

    Work made me stay late, so I had no choice but to cancel my date.

Common mistakes

  • ✗因为学好中文，他每天练习。

    ✓为了学好中文，他每天练习。

    Wèile xuéhǎo Zhōngwén, tā měi tiān liànxí.

    Learning Chinese well is the goal, not the cause. Goals take 为了.

  • ✗我只好不去。 (meaning "I'm forced not to go")

    ✓我只好不去了。

    Wǒ zhǐhǎo bú qù le.

    只好 usually ends with 了 to show the situation forced a change of plan.

Questions learners ask

Can I mix 由于 with 所以?

Yes, 由于…所以… is common too. 因为…因此… is also heard. The full formal pair is 由于…因此….

Is 不得不 a double negative?

Literally "not able not to", which comes out as a strong positive: you must. Don't add another 不.
