本来, 原来, 果然, 终于, 其实 and 突然: Expectations and What Really Happened
Stories are about expectations: what was planned, what you thought, and what actually happened. Chinese has a precise adverb for each relationship, and they're what make a narrative sound natural.
本来 vs 原来
本来 (běnlái) + verb: what was originally planned or the case, before it changed. 本来就 means "in the first place, anyway". 原来 (yuánlái) at the start of a clause is the moment of discovery: "so that's why, it turns out". 难怪…原来… is "no wonder ..., it turns out ...". 原来的 + noun means "the original".
我本来想去,后来有事没去成。
Wǒ běnlái xiǎng qù, hòulái yǒu shì méi qùchéng.
I was going to go, but something came up.
原来是你!
Yuánlái shì nǐ!
Oh, it's you!
难怪他没来,原来他病了。
Nánguài tā méi lái, yuánlái tā bìng le.
No wonder he didn't come. He's ill.
果然, 竟然, 终于
果然 (guǒrán): sure enough, as predicted. 竟然 (jìngrán): against all expectation. 终于 (zhōngyú) + verb + 了: at last, after waiting or effort (usually a welcome outcome). 最后 is the neutral "finally, in the end".
天气预报说今天下雨,果然下雨了。
Tiānqì yùbào shuō jīntiān xià yǔ, guǒrán xià yǔ le.
The forecast said rain, and sure enough it rained.
他竟然忘了我的生日。

He actually forgot my birthday.
等了一个小时,车终于来了。
Děng le yí ge xiǎoshí, chē zhōngyú lái le.
After an hour's wait, the bus finally came.
其实 vs 确实
其实 (qíshí) corrects an impression: "actually, in fact (not what you'd think)". 确实 (quèshí) confirms one: "indeed, really".
他看起来很年轻,其实已经五十岁了。
Tā kàn qǐlai hěn niánqīng, qíshí yǐjīng wǔshí suì le.
He looks young, but he's actually fifty.

This method really is good.
突然 vs 忽然
Both mean suddenly before a verb. 突然 (tūrán) is also an adjective: 很突然, 太突然了. 忽然 is only an adverb. 意外 is an accident (出意外) or "unexpected" (很意外).
这个消息太突然了。
Zhège xiāoxi tài tūrán le.
This news is so sudden.
他突然站了起来。
Tā tūrán zhàn le qǐlai.

Questions learners ask
Can 原来 also mean "originally"?
Yes: 原来的计划 (the original plan), 他原来住在这儿 (he used to live here). But for a plan that changed, 本来 is the usual choice, and for a discovery, only 原来 works.
Is 竟然 always negative?
No, just unexpected: 他竟然考了第一 (he came first, of all things).
