Regional Mandarin: Southern and Taiwan Grammar and Colloquial Frames

The course teaches mainland standard Mandarin (普通话), but you'll hear many varieties. Speakers from the south and from Taiwan carry grammar from their local languages into Mandarin, and some of it has spread widely through media. This guide helps you understand these forms. In your own Mandarin, stick to the standard unless you live in one of these regions.

Southern Mandarin features

有 + verb for a completed action: 我有去过 (I did go) instead of 我去过. 先 at the end of a clause, from Cantonese: 你走先 (you go first) for 你先走. 给 for causative 让 'let', as in Cantonese and Min: 别给他跑了 (don't let him get away); 给 as a passive marker (钱包给偷了), by contrast, is ordinary colloquial Mandarin everywhere. 好 + adjective for a plain 'very' in ordinary statements (今天好开心, 这个好好吃), where northern speech prefers 很 or 真 and keeps 好 mostly for exclamations (好漂亮啊!). Speakers also often merge zh / z, ch / c, sh / s and n / l.

Southern usageStandard MandarinMeaning
我有吃过我吃过I've eaten it
你走先你先走you go first
我吃多一碗我多吃一碗I'll have another bowl
  • 你先走,我马上就来。

Nǐ xiān zǒu, wǒ mǎshàng jiù lái.

You go first; I'll be right there.

Taiwan Mandarin

Taiwan Mandarin (国语 / 國語) is a standard of its own, written in traditional characters. Grammar points include 有没有 + verb as a past question (你有没有去? = 你去了没有?), 会 with adjectives meaning 'is' (会不会冷? = 冷不冷?), and less use of the neutral tone and erhua. Vocabulary also differs: 计程车 vs 出租车 (taxi), 捷运 vs 地铁 (metro), 软体 vs 软件 (software).

  • 你昨天去看电影了没有?

Nǐ zuótiān qù kàn diànyǐng le méiyǒu?

Did you go and see the film yesterday?

Colloquial frames

Spoken Mandarin has productive frames with repeated or paired verbs. V来V去 (想来想去, after thinking it over and over): repeated back-and-forth action, often getting nowhere or leading up to a conclusion (想来想去,还是决定不去). 东 V 西 V (东找西找, search all over): scattered action. 不 V 白不 V (不吃白不吃, it's free, so you'd be a fool not to): taking advantage of something free. 越 V 越… and 一 V 就… you already know.

  • 我想来想去,还是决定不去了。

Wǒ xiǎng lái xiǎng qù, háishi juédìng bú qù le.

After thinking it over and over, I decided not to go after all.

  • 反正是免费的,不吃白不吃。

Fǎnzhèng shì miǎnfèi de, bù chī bái bù chī.

It's free anyway, so we might as well eat.

Common mistakes

  • ✗我有看过这部电影。 (in a standard Mandarin exam)

    ✓我看过这部电影。

    Wǒ kànguo zhè bù diànyǐng.

有 + verb is southern and Taiwan usage. In standard mainland Mandarin, 过 or 了 alone marks the experience or completion.

  • ✗我们走先吧。

    ✓我们先走吧。

    Wǒmen xiān zǒu ba.

Final 先 comes from Cantonese. Standard Mandarin puts 先 before the verb.

  • ✗反正是免费的,不吃不白吃。

    ✓反正是免费的,不吃白不吃。

Fǎnzhèng shì miǎnfèi de, bù chī bái bù chī.

The frame is 不 V 白不 V: 白 ('for nothing, a wasted chance') sits right before the second 不, so it reads 'not eating = wasting the chance'. Moving 白 after 不 breaks the fixed frame, a common slip because English 'you'd be a fool not to' has no matching word order.

Questions learners ask

Is Taiwan Mandarin 'wrong'?

No. It's a standard variety with its own norms. The course teaches the mainland standard, so exams and exercises here follow that.

Should I learn traditional characters?

If you plan to read material from Taiwan, Hong Kong or older texts, learning to recognise them is worthwhile. Most traditional forms are predictable from the simplified ones.
