North and South: Different Words for the Same Thing

Write a short anecdote (200–400 characters) for your blog about the misunderstandings you had after moving to a part of China where people use different words from the ones you learned (土豆 / 洋芋, 冰棍儿 / 雪糕, 自行车 / 单车, 西红柿 / 番茄, 知道 / 晓得).

  • At least three north–south word pairs
  • 管 A 叫 B to explain a local word
  • A regional word or feature (晓得, 蛮, 儿化) glossed in standard Mandarin
  • A storyline with a punchline or reflection

Pick with a tap, a number key or Space. A Chinese keyboard on your device works in the box below too.
