Unit 8 review

A travel blog has asked readers to write about 'my first Chinese festival with a Chinese family' (400–700 characters). Describe the food and how it was cooked, explain at least two customs and the puns or taboos behind them, and report some of the sayings and idioms people used at the table.

  • Food: cooking methods (蒸, 炖, 煎, 熬, 拌), 口味 or 风味, and a food metaphor (吃香, 吃苦, 饭碗)
  • Customs explained with 按照习俗, 讲究 and 忌讳, and the homophone behind them (福倒了, 年年有余, 送钟, 分梨)
  • A saying, a 歇后语 or a 惯用语 used by someone at the table (百闻不如一见, 王婆卖瓜——自卖自夸, 吹牛, 泼冷水)
  • A colloquial frame such as 吃来吃去, 聊来聊去 or 东看看西看看, and set phrases like 张灯结彩, 亲朋好友, 一年到头

Pick with a tap, a number key or Space. A Chinese keyboard on your device works in the box below too.
