Unit 11 review

A mainland friend is about to visit Taipei and Hong Kong for the first time. Write them an email (400–700 characters) with practical language tips: the words for transport, shopping and paying that differ, how to read signs and menus in traditional characters (including one or two traps), and what they'll notice about how people talk.

  • Regional word pairs for transport and daily life: 捷运/地铁, 计程车/的士/出租车, 公车/巴士/公交车, 机车/摩托车, 冷气/空调
  • Reading traditional characters: regular radical changes (言/讠, 金/钅, 門/门, 車/车) and at least one merger trap (麵/面, 髮/發, 後/后, 臺/台)
  • Shopping and paying: 打折 or 折扣, 付款, 刷卡, 账单 or 买单/埋单, 住宿
  • Taiwan and Hong Kong speech: 有 + verb, 會 + adjective, particles 啦/喔/耶, or Cantonese words in Hong Kong (落车, 搞掂)

Pick with a tap, a number key or Space. A Chinese keyboard on your device works in the box below too.
