Unit 12 review

A Chinese-language student magazine has asked you for a column (400–700 characters) titled '网络让汉语变了吗?'. Describe how the internet is changing Chinese, with examples of new words, abbreviations and memes, give your own view on whether this is a good thing, and end with a word of warning about privacy online.

  • New words and how they're made: affixes (~族, ~控, ~感, ~化, 零~) and abbreviations (网购, 高铁, 双减), explained
  • Internet slang and memes (内卷, 躺平, 破防, 打工人, 凡尔赛) with a comment on register and how quickly they date
  • Loanwords or letter words (粉丝, 黑客, APP) and the debate about them
  • A clear opinion in written register (在我看来, 一方面…另一方面…, 不可否认) and a closing warning about 隐私, 泄露 or 账号

Pick with a tap, a number key or Space. A Chinese keyboard on your device works in the box below too.
