Unit 16 review
A Chinese university magazine is running a debate page on the 'age 35 threshold' (35岁门槛): many employers in China won't hire applicants over 35. Write an argumentative essay (400–700 characters) giving your view. State your thesis, concede what the other side gets right, rebut their main argument, analyse why the practice exists, and finish with a conclusion and a recommendation.
- A clear thesis and evidence: 笔者认为 / 在我看来, 以…为例, 据统计 or 事实证明
- A concession followed by a rebuttal: 诚然 / 不可否认 / 无可厚非 … 但 / 然而, and 此说法值得商榷, 站不住脚 or 恰恰相反
- Cause analysis: 究其原因, 归根到底, 根源在于 or 之所以…是因为
- A conclusion with 综上所述 / 由此看来 / 有鉴于此, ideally with 与其说…不如说… somewhere in the argument
