Unit 19 review
A Chinese student magazine is running a series called 'Old Words, New Times'. Write an essay (400–700 characters) on one classical saying (from Confucius, Mencius, Laozi or Zhuangzi) that you think still matters today. Quote it, explain what it meant in modern Chinese, give an example from modern life, and say where you think it no longer applies.
- The saying quoted exactly, with its source: 孔子说 / 《论语》中说 / 正如孟子所言
- A modern-Chinese paraphrase that explains its classical words (君子 = 有道德的人, 和 = 和谐 …)
- A modern example and a balanced view: 诚然…但, 在…的同时, 与其说…不如说… (Unit 16)
- Classical-tradition vocabulary: 儒家, 君子 / 小人, 古人, 天经地义, 以史为鉴 …
