He Said, She Said

Kim works in a small office in Sydney. On Monday morning, she was getting a coffee when she heard the boss, Mr. Lee, on the phone. He said something about "the party" and "Friday". Then he closed his door.

Kim told Raj. "Mr. Lee said something about a party on Friday." Raj loves parties. He didn't ask any questions. He told Amy, and he told Ben, and he told the two new people in accounting.

By lunchtime, everybody was talking about the party. "Is it at the office or at a restaurant?" "Should we bring something?" Amy said she was going to make a cake. Ben said he had a great playlist. Raj bought a new shirt.

On Friday afternoon, everybody got ready. Amy brought the cake. Ben connected his phone to a speaker. At five o'clock, Mr. Lee came out of his office and stopped. "What's going on?" he asked.

"The party," said Raj. "You told Kim about it." Mr. Lee looked at Kim. "I didn't tell anybody anything," he said. "On Monday I was speaking to my wife. It was my daughter's birthday party. On Friday. At our house."

For a moment, nobody spoke. Then Amy looked at the cake, and Ben looked at his speaker. "Well," said Mr. Lee, "the cake is here, and the music is here. I'll call my wife." The party started at five fifteen.
