The Restrepo family had been in London for two weeks, and they were ready to go home to Bogota. At nine o'clock in the evening, the screen at Heathrow changed. Next to their flight, a single red word appeared: Laura, the mother, looked at her husband Felipe. Their two children, Mateo and Valentina, were already half asleep on their suitcases.

At the airline desk there was a long line of tired, angry passengers. A man in front of them was shouting at the young woman behind the desk. When it was finally their turn, Laura smiled and spoke calmly. "Good evening. I know it's been a difficult night for you. Could you tell us when the next flight to Bogota leaves, please?"

The woman, whose name said Priya, looked "Thank you for being so nice," she said. "The next flight is tomorrow at eleven. I'm afraid all the hotels near the airport are full." Felipe asked, "Would it be possible to get some food for the children?" Priya printed four immediately. "And may we have some Laura added. "Of course. I'll call someone right now."

Twenty minutes later, a man brought them four and four small The family found a quiet corner near a closed coffee shop. Mateo asked, "Can I sleep on the floor, Mom?" "You may sleep wherever you want tonight," Laura laughed.

Around midnight, Felipe went to look for hot chocolate. At the only open cafe, he met a pilot in uniform, sitting alone with a cup of tea. His name was Captain Hughes, and his flight had been too. "Do you mind if I sit here?" Felipe asked. "Not at all," the pilot said. "I'd be glad of the company."

They talked for an hour. Captain Hughes had flown to Bogota many times and loved the city. He told Felipe that his own children lived in Australia now and that he only saw them once a year. When Felipe went back to the corner, the pilot came with him. He showed the children photos of the and taught them how to make paper planes from old cards.

The next morning, the flight left on time. Just before take-off, a flight walked up to their seats with a small envelope. Inside there were two pilot and a note: "Thank you for a much better night than I expected. Safe travels. Captain Hughes." Valentina wore hers all the way to Bogota.
