Every Saturday morning, Daniel Nguyen swapped his accountant's suit for a yellow shirt, a and a pair of boots that had seen better seasons, and refereed under-twelves soccer in a park in the north of Melbourne. He did it for free. He told his friends it kept him fit; the truth was that he loved the game and had never been good enough to play it.

Most matches were good-natured affairs, full of missed tackles and wildly enthusiastic celebrations. This one was not. The Brunswick Eagles and the Coburg Lions had a long and bitter mostly among the parents, and the was packed with adults in folding chairs who seemed to have forgotten that the players were eleven.

With three minutes left, the score was one-all. A Lions striker cut inside and shot, and an Eagles defender, a small, girl called Mia, herself across the goal. The ball struck her arm and bounced wide. Daniel was ten meters away with a perfect view. He blew his and pointed to the penalty spot.

For a moment there was silence. Then the Eagles' erupted. A father in a team scarf leapt to his feet, red in the face, shouting that it had hit her shoulder. Someone else called Daniel a A grandmother told him, at considerable volume, to get his eyes tested. Daniel felt his heart pounding and his cheeks burning, but he kept his face perfectly calm. Losing his temper, he knew, would only add fuel to the fire.

The Eagles coach marched onto the field. "You've got to be joking," he said. "That's a shocking decision. You're ruining these kids' morning." Daniel listened, nodded, and said quietly that he had seen it clearly and the decision stood. He asked the coach to return to his technical area. The coach at him for a long moment, then stormed off, muttering.

It was Mia herself who changed the atmosphere. While the adults were still shouting, she walked over to Daniel, her eyes full of tears, and said, loudly enough for her own to hear, "It was my hand, sir. I didn't mean it, but it was." She was clearly Daniel down to her level and told her that accidents happen, that she had made a brave save and an even braver admission, and that she should hold her head up high.

A strange fell over the park. The father in the scarf sat down slowly. The grandmother suddenly became very interested in her thermos. The Lions striker stepped up, took a deep breath and struck the penalty into the bottom corner. The Lions celebrated, but not wildly, as if they too sensed that something more important had just happened.

The match ended two-one. Afterwards, as Daniel was packing away the corner flags, the Eagles coach came over. He shifted from foot to foot for a while and then said, without quite looking at him, that he had perhaps overreacted. "It was the right call," he admitted. "I just didn't want it to be."

Daniel drove home with his hands still slightly shaky on the steering wheel. He had made hundreds of decisions on that field, most of them forgotten by Monday. He suspected he would remember this one for a long time, not because of the penalty, but because of the eleven-year-old who had shown a park full of adults how to lose with dignity.
