When their grandmother passed away, the three inherited the house on Elm Street, along with forty years of and a roof that had better days. Selling it seemed the obvious thing to do; agreeing on anything else did not.

Rachel, the eldest, wanted it gone by spring. Mark, who had spent every childhood summer there, could hardly himself to open a drawer, let alone empty one. And Sam, the youngest, kept objects nobody else remembered, as though the house were quietly rewriting their shared past.

It was Sam who found the letters, behind a loose board in the attic. Their grandmother, it turned out, had once been to someone else entirely, and had it off a week before the wedding.

They read the letters aloud that evening, sitting on the floor among half-packed boxes. By the time they had finished, nobody was in much of a hurry to sell.
