How Hangul Works
See how Hangul letters stack into syllable blocks, and why the letters look like the mouth that says them.
The Basic Vowels: ㅏ ㅓ ㅗ ㅜ ㅡ ㅣ
Read, say and write the six basic vowels, with the silent ㅇ that holds their place.
First Consonants: ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ
Add ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ to the vowels and read your first real words, like 나무, 고기 and 나라.
More Consonants: ㅂ ㅅ ㅇ ㅈ ㅎ
Learn ㅂ ㅅ ㅇ ㅈ ㅎ, the two jobs of ㅇ, and read words like 바지, 모자 and 하나.
The Y-Vowels: ㅑ ㅕ ㅛ ㅠ
Add one stroke to get a 'y' glide, and read 야구, 여자, 요리 and 우유.
Practice: Reading Your First Words
No new letters: read, hear and type your first dozen Korean words.
Aspirated Consonants: ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅊ
Learn the four breathy consonants ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅊ and hear how they differ from ㄱ ㄷ ㅂ ㅈ.
Tense Consonants: ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅆ ㅉ
Learn the doubled, tense consonants and the three-way contrast in 달 / 탈 / 딸.
Practice: Hearing Plain, Aspirated and Tense
Train your ear on plain, aspirated and tense consonants, and say goodbye to romanization.
Vowels ㅐ ㅔ ㅒ ㅖ
Read ㅐ ㅔ ㅒ ㅖ, learn why 개 and 게 sound the same, and meet pronunciation in Hangul brackets.
Combined Vowels: ㅘ ㅙ ㅚ ㅝ ㅞ ㅟ ㅢ
Build the combined vowels from their parts, read 사과, 뭐 and 의자, and learn the three readings of ㅢ.
Final Consonants, Part 1 of 2: the Seven Final Sounds
Read final consonants and learn why only seven sounds are said at the bottom of a block.
Final Consonants, Part 2 of 2: Double Finals
Recognise blocks with two final letters, like 닭, 값 and 읽다, and know which letter is said.
Linking Sounds: Liaison
Learn the first sound change: a final consonant moves into a following block that starts with silent ㅇ.
Reading Loanwords
Read English words spelled in Hangul, like 커피, 버스 and 아이스크림, and spot Konglish.
Typing Korean
Set up a Korean keyboard on your phone or computer, use the course's on-screen keyboard, and type your first words.
Practice: Signs, Menus and the Subway Map
Read real Korean signs, café and snack-bar menus and subway stations, and type a simple order.
