The Witness

Mrs. Patel was waiting for the number 14 bus in Leicester. It was Saturday morning, and the city center was busy. People were doing their shopping, and a man was playing music outside the bank. Mrs. Patel was reading the news on her phone.

Suddenly, she saw a young man. He was running very fast, and he was carrying a big brown box. He wasn't looking at the people around him. He ran past the bank, past the shops and past the bus stop. "That's strange," Mrs. Patel thought. "Why is he running? What is in that box?"

Mrs. Patel was a careful person. She took out her phone and called the police. "Hello? I'm at the bus stop on Granby Street. A man is running with a big box. I think he stole something." While she was talking to the police officer, she was watching the man.

Then the man stopped. He was standing in front of a little girl. The girl was crying, and her mother was looking very worried. The man opened the box. Inside was a small white puppy with one black ear. The girl stopped crying and hugged the puppy. The man was smiling.

Mrs. Patel understood. The puppy was lost, and the man found it and ran to bring it back. "Hello? Are you still there?" the police officer was saying. "Yes," said Mrs. Patel. "Sorry. It was a puppy. Everything is fine." Then her bus arrived, and she got on. She was still smiling when she got home.
