You arrive at the office on Monday morning, and a you know is waiting for the next to you. She smiles and says, "Cold today, isn't it?" Do you answer with one word, start a long conversation or look at your phone? Welcome to talk, the short, friendly conversations about nothing very important that English speakers have every day.

Many Spanish speakers find talk strange at first. In Spain or Latin America, people often talk to more directly or more personally. In English-speaking offices, talk is a polite way to show that you are friendly and open. It isn't really about the weather. It's about building a relationship, one minute at a time.

So what can you talk about? Safe topics include the weather, the weekend, food, travel, sports and local events. "Did you do anything nice this weekend?" and "Have you been on vacation yet this year?" are perfect questions. Question tags are very useful too: "It's busy today, isn't it?" or "You were at the meeting yesterday, weren't you?" They invite the other person to agree and continue.

The secret is to keep the conversation going. Don't just answer "Yes" or "Fine." Add a little information and ask something back: "It was great, thanks. I went with some friends. How about you?" Short, positive and curious is the right style.

There are also topics you should avoid, at least until you know someone well: politics, religion, someone's age or and complaints about your boss. Be careful with direct questions like "How much did your house cost?" They might be normal in your country, but they can sound in English.

Finally, learn how to finish. talk is supposed to be Phrases like "Well, I'd better get back to work" or "Nice talking to you, see you later!" end the conversation politely. With a little practice, you'll find that these conversations make your working day much more
